Romantic Getaways Air Safari

PBS Romantic Getaways Air Safari September 4-11, 2005 by Steve & Teri Walker

Ladies, have you ever just wanted to fly somewhere off the beaten track with your sweetheart and luxuriate in romantic small hotels for an entire week? Well, you’re on your own there but if you would consider taking your husband along - here’s your chance! Although we are still attending to the ‘pesky details’ but thought you might like a peek of the highlights of our Romantic Getaways Air Safari.

The idea here is to spend more time enjoying the lovely ambience of our carefully chosen Romantic Getaways than traveling – so the flights between hotels are quite short. The weather in early September should be nice and all flights are planned for VFR (good weather) so don’t worry about that. All flights will be conducted at or below 9,500 feet, so you can relax there, too.

Hotel del Coronado - Discover why Zane Grey loved Avalon......

Del CoronadoIf you ride a horse or hike up into the hills overlooking Avalon Canyon and take in the beautiful vista of blue ocean, rolling grasslands and the yacht spotted harbor below, you'll have some idea of just why this island appealed to Zane Grey as a haven from the literary bustle surrounding a best selling author. On the cactus covered hillside just above the Avalon Casino is the sprawling Hopi Indian style pueblo that Grey built in 1926. It is now a hotel for you to enjoy. At sunset you can sit outside on one of the patios, drink in hand, watch the city lights below, track boats in and out of the harbor, hear the canon go off as marlin are weighed in and simply relax...just as Zane Grey did. All sixteen rooms have private baths. A long hall divides the bedrooms overlooking the ocean and those overlooking the hills. A large living and dining room was graced by a fireplace with a log mantel, open beam ceilings, a hewn plank door and an oak dining table with heavy benches. The teak beams were brought from Tahiti on one of Grey's fishing trips. Workmen from the time of construction reported that goat's milk was added to the mortar. Later workmen who replaced some small windows with picture windows attested to the strength of the walls. Zane Grey Pueblo has the best view of Avalon, the bays and mountains. A fresh water pool surrounded by graceful gardens is enjoyed by guests. Catalina Island has so much to offer any vacationer. The weather is great any time of the year. Beach, harbor and town shopping and restaurants at your fingertips.
